About Our Institute
Discover the Cluster of Excellence SDIAT —  Shandong Institute of Advanced Technology.

Distinguished Scientific Organization

Beginning as a proposal initiated by Nobel Laureate Prof. Samuel C.C. Ting, SDIAT officially started its work in 2019. Now, about five years later, the cluster has gained international visibility for its research. Scientists who are experienced in the mega scientific project, the AMS experiment, came to join and form our founding academic team. With the spirit that, the young scientists and engineers are the driving force, we have gathered a group of young talents with an international perspective, research originality, and academic potential in various disciplines including physics, chemistry, heat transfer, computing and information, materials, and mechanical engineering to work jointly on our structured long-term research.

Enabling Research
SDIAT creates an advanced institutional environment that respects individual values and provides the best opportunities for prominent scholars worldwide, enabling and supporting research by:
  • promoting scientists on all career levels,
  • providing infrastructure, instrumentation and equipment, and
  • communicating science to various target groups.
We have established a pragmatic and efficient governance system with minimal administrative departments and staff, emphasizing procedural fairness and ensuring a supportive and free environment through rigorous management.

Flexible Funding
SDIAT members appreciate the flexible funding we can provide. A considerable share of our total budget is reserved for internal support programs. The flexible funding allows us to accelerate the scientific innovation process, since it allows us to reorient our research program when needed, to follow new trends, to immediately pursue a research idea and test it, or to support talents when we find them. The vibrant and passionate community we have created here over the past few years is transforming SDIAT into an attractive hub. Step by step, we continue to advance towards our objective of establishing a distinguished scientific organization.

PROMOTING SCIENTISTS ON ALL CAREER LEVELS                                                      PROVIDING INFRASTRUCTURE, INS-TRUMENTATION, AND EQUIPMENT                                                      COMMUNICATING SCIENCE  TO  VARIOUS TARGET GROUPS

Scientific Goals

We outlined the scientific goals the institute would aim to achieve, which include:

Step 1, 2021 - 2025
Assemble a high-level academic team to establish stable research directions and scientific goals; leveraging the AMS Computing Clusters, the multistage cryogenic facility, and the platform for measuring the structures of materials, conduct in-depth AMS data analysis, advance cryogenic technology, and contribute to regional economic and social development while pursuing basic research.

Step 2, 2026 - 2030
Focus on basic science and applied technology research, coordinating efforts in particle science detections and cryogenic technologies, organize large-scale scientific projects, and eventually become a top-notch research institute with a comprehensive academic system and strong competitiveness in key research areas.

Step 3, 2031 - 2040
Develop an innovation chain for scientific research and advanced technology, integrating mathematics, physics, materials, information, and engineering, with measurement physics as its foundation; drive significant advancements in cutting-edge science and advanced technology, while making recognized and active contributions to regional economic and social development.

OUR MISSION
Discover and understand the novel and unifying concepts in the interdisciplinary research fields of science and technology.  Make them tangible and practical, to develop the extraordinary applications within reach by building public scientific platforms.

Publications
Pioneering research in top journals.
Results from the excellent researches by our teams are regularly featured in high-impact journals, such as Physical Review Letters, Science, Nature Communications, The Astrophysical Journal, Physical Review B, just to name a few. SDIAT papers drive progress and inspire new discoveries across disciplines worldwide

Support Programs
We provide an extensive selection  of support programs for SDIAT researchers, fostering collaboration and providing funding and opportunities for scientists at all career levels.

Early Career Support
We place a major emphasis on  supporting early-career re-searchers, facilitating their journey  towards independence, supporting them in establishing their own  research groups, and promoting their visibility through outreach.

Prospects of Our Cluster of Excellence
Nobody knows the future, but we can create a better one through efforts.  Some seemingly useless things are quietly shaping both our present and future.

Why Basic Research?
" The prime motivation of basic research is human curiosity – the innate passion to learn something new or obtain a deeper understanding of a natural phenomena.  Basic research is sometimes viewed as being remote from daily life. Only after some time, when applications develop and the public becomes familiar with the new phenomena, does the value of basic research become understood. Basic scientific research is the foundation from which knowledge is advanced and technological development is propelled and should be supported. Results from basic scientific research, although difficult to predict in advance, have had a profound effect on society. " (Professor Samuel C.C. Ting)
